      Golden Wedding-John and Mary
On Saturday, June 21 about 175 friends and relatives of John and Mary Orford gathered at the United Church Hall in Gore Bay to join with them in celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
John and Mary (Granger) were wed at Mary's home in Gordon on June 23, 1936. Attending them were the bride's sister, Florence, and the groom's cousin, John Robertson, of Ice Lake. Most of their married years were spent farming in Mills Township. After retiring in 1974, they moved to Spring Bay and then to Gordon in 1982.
Special guests at the celebration were Florence Noble, and Elizabeth Robertson, John's widow. Norm Morrell acted as a very capable master of ceremonies, as well as presenting certificates from MP Maurice Foster, and the Governor General of Canada. John Lane, M.P.P. and Gary Chandler were also on hand to offer congratulations and make presentations. Rev. F. Haner of Spring Bay asked Grace prior to the lunch which was served on long tables highlighted by a beautiful double-layered cake which was made and decorated by Alma Jean Orford.
Six of John and Mary's family were present with their own families-Jack, Pat, Don, Floyd, Murray and Doug. Two daughters, Lois and Marian who reside in British Columbia, were unable to attend.
Besides Florence, all of Mary's brothers were present-Jim and Annie of the Sault, Walter of Huntsville, George and Doreen of Espanola along with several nieces and nephews. Also coming from a distance were cousins from Michigan, Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph's Island.
