Lots of Wolves on Strawberry Says Little Current Hunter
      Elmer Lovelace Brings One Back
The first wolf of the season to be brought back by a Little Current hunter fell to the gun of Elmer Lovelace Sunday morning on Strawberry Island. He is drying the skin now and waiting to pick up his bounty.
"There seems to be quite a few wolves over there," Elmer said of Strawberry Island, in the North Channel a few miles east of Little Current. "We've heard them howloing when we were out duck hunting.
"There aren't many deer on the island, though," he said, "and last year there were a lot of deer. We have hardly seen any sign of them, so the place must be thick with wolves."
Elmer made his $25 shot while out after partridege with Don Patrick, also of Little Current.
"We were walking through low brush and grass when all at once it started running off to one side and away from me," he said. "I had a single shot .22 so I just had one try at it."
Both hunters started to search through the heavy underbrush for the wolf, found it about 100 yards from the spot where it was shot, dead from a wound through the shoulder and lungs.
The animal, which means a $25 bounty for Elmer was a female brush wolf which he said was about a year old. It was the only bright spot of Sunday's hunt, for the pair shot no partidge or ducks.
"We have had quite a bit of luck duck hunting on Strawberry Island early in the morning," Elmer said, "but it is no good at all this year once the sun gets to work. By the middle of the morning, Strawberry Island is no good at all for ducks.

Lovelace-In loving memory of a dear dad and grandfather, Elmer L. Lovelace, who passed away on October 21st, 1970.
We often think of days gone by,
      When we were all 'together'
A shadow o'er our lives has cast,
      Our loved one's gone forever.
Always remembered by the Lovelace children, grandchildren.
