      George Dixon Dead
When it became known on Friday evening last, that Geo. Dixon Sr. had died at his residence, Gore Bay, it created little surprise as the end had been expected for some days. Mr. Dixon had not been too well for the last year, but during the last few months had been sinking slowly. Some three weeks ago his two absent daughters, Mrs. Wm. Purvis, and Mrs. Linden Thorn, came down from Selkirk and Brandon, to see him before it might be too late. As the end was apparently near, they remained with him until he passed away last Friday evening about nine o'clock.
Mr. Dixon was an Englishman by birth and when quite a young man, enlisted and spent eleven years in the British army, a greater part of this time being spent in India. He was in several battles that stand out prominent in English History. He was one of the brave men who fought their way through India under Havelock. He was in the front at the relief of Lucknow when the Scotch Lassie heard the Pilbroch, a sound so familiar to her native hills. He was with Havelock in the besieged city and remained there until reinforcements came to liberate them, as they were then on the point of starvation.
Mr. Dixon returned to England, got married and subsequently came to Canada. He lived in the County of Grey for a number of years, moving to this Island about 20 years ago. He leaves a widow, four daughters and two sons; Mrs. Wm. Purvis, Mrs. Alex Purvis, Mrs. Wm. Dinsmore, Mrs. Linden Thorn, Henry and Geo. Dixon.
He was a staunch member of the English Church, industrious and honourable and an upright man. The Town Flag hung at halfmast on Saturday out of respect to his memory. His remains were followed to the Gordon Cemetery on Sunday last by a large concourse of people who turned out in large numbers to pay their last tribute of respect to the remains of a brave old British soldier.
